Questions & Comments
interesting never seen an error like this watching
doesn't the mint use this technique to destroy some coinage intended for use but were found unworthy called a waffle, quote from Whitman official US coin guide.in the mid-2003 the us mint aquired machines to eliminate security cocerns and the cost associated with providing mint police escorts to private vendors for the melting of scrap, substandard struck coins, planchets, and blanks. This has kept most coins after 2003 from getting into circulation that were errors.Real coin ,real facts, really. The mint does not mind these circulating in secondary market due to lack of "legal tender " status.
prior to 2003 ,this one is a 1996,it could be an early attempt at this,it could be a coin stamped some other way as well.I can think of 3-4 machines that could do this.Neat either way.I don't think it could have passed security like this unknowingly but, stuff does happen. Cool coin no matter.
