The listing, Old 1837 Satirical Hard Times Token has ended.
This is a Satirical Hard Times Token called Illustrious Predecessor from 1837, Obverse depicts the government's fiscal agent, a tortoise,
with a safe representing the Subtreasury system on its back as it slowly progresses - outlined with the words Executive Financiering.
Reverse depicts a running jackass alluding to Martin Van Buren's rapid growth in popularity - outlined with the inscription, "Illustrious,
I follow in the steps of my Predecessor". Van Buren is now generally acknowledged as having had exceptional financial prowess and his
primary achievement could be said to have been the separation of Bank and State which helped to establish the Subtreasury system, which was
maintained until the passage of the General Appropriation Act of May 29th, 1920 which transferred the functions of the Subtreasury system
to the Treasury, the mints and assay offices, and the Federal Reserve banks, which was completed in 1921.This Hard Times Token will be an
excellent addition to the collection of history lovers in general, and Van Buren and monetary policy fans specifically.
