Questions & Comments
Most people that collect coins knows that the Carson City mint closed for good in 1893. So as the seller stated it is fake.
Unusual coin, even though counterfeit. It used to be against Federal Law to sell counterfeit money. This law may have been repealed, not really sure! I believe Federal Law did not want people selling counterfeit money under the impression that is was the real thing! I have purchased two counterfeit Morgan silver dollars in the past on Listia without being told they were counterfeit. I always check every silver coin I receive from Listia, coin dealers, coin shops, etc. I got my credits back and returned the fakes to their owners.! The reason I commented is because I didn't want you to get bit!! Probably can Google to see if law is still in effect! Good luck! Kindest regards, jcmath1
http://www.trueamericancollectibles.com/1933-20-St.-Gaudens-Gold-Double/M/B001DCL9AO.htm replicas are sold everyday on tv..and are permitted by the national coin act...Granted most replicas are clearly marked with the word COPY...on is not and probably is a china counterfeit..still not illegal to sell as long as you post its a fake ..its only illegal if you try and purchase something with it. and today nobody uses silver dollars because the are worth more than face value..I am sure you have seen the infomercial on TV or seen on eBay the st Gaudens 1933 famous gold copy coin fore sale. So don't worry about me getting bit..I am not ..
By the way, we have been through your fine city many times on our way from Tallahassee to Orlando, of course this was before the new interchange was built. We always ate at some cafe, can't remember the name, but it was on the main highway through Perry. A very nice community and town.!!
By the way there is quite a market for replica coins because some will never receive the originals in their life time so they use them as hole fillers..and some can bring in a pretty penny...i personally don't collect them but many do....my wife works in tally and we have been here in Perry for about 10 years. We live on the Keaton beach side and plan on retiring here.Have a nice day and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
In checking the Official Red Book A Guide to United States Coins, there was NO 1897-CC minted; however, they did mint an 1897-P; 1897-D; and an 1897-S; but NO 1897-CC. Jim
