Fine introduction to a frighteningly relevant artist

Format: Paperback
While George Grosz was commenting on the Germany of the early 1930s, rife with corruption, greed, and the growing shadow of the Nazi party, his art remains all too timely & contemporary. The boated, greedy, grotesque figures caught somewhere between being humans & pigs, with the worst qualities of both, are quite familiar today, aren't they? This compact volume offers a very good overview of the artist & his art in context, leaving the reader to make the obvious comparison to the present day. Scathing & scabrous, Grosz' work spares no-one & nothing as he strips naked & dissects a culture sinking in its own gelatinous decay, with imminent brutality & mass slaughter clearly visible behind the screen of fat capitalists, decadent aristocrats, muscle-minded military, and lumpen labor -- all tumbling happily & ignorantly into the waiting Hell of their own failure to realize even a fraction of their lost potential as human beings. These certainly aren't pretty pictures by any means, but they sadly remain necessary ones -- highly recommended!
