The listing, VHS "WEST SIDE STORY" RIVAL GANGS COLLIDE ON THE STREETS, BUT BREAK INTO SONG & DANCE, NATALIE WOOD has ended.
An amazing piece of "Cinematic Art" and still refreshingly innovative -- 65 years later! Laugh if you wish at the dated politics, but you'll miss the point: nothing this simple, this passionate, this boldly, coherently artistic, had ever been seen in cinema: New York City was both Star and Back-Drop to music by Leondard Bernstein that bottled its essence. There is more unexpected delight in this film's art direction and photography than any CGI-infused effort I've seen… Note particularly YOUR sudden, visceral shock as the boys start to dance out of their butch-muggery down the street; switcblades in hand? The juxtaposition, such artistry, still delivers the best kind of chill: witnessing in a moment Man meets his animal instincts... Add to the Cinemascope and the Score the powerful voices of Marni Nixon (for Natalie Wood), Rita Moreno and the wonderfully-delicate Richard Beymer and "the movie musical" just doesn't get ANY better. (Well, maybe "Chicago", but that's a whole different magilla!) ENJOY!
