If you don't mind buting an old Laser Disc and find an unopened copy of the Original Theatrical Release you can get see the OTR without all the issues the DVD release had. Far better than trying to find a 2004 release copy of the DVD sets. There is a rumor thay Disney is going to release the OTR on Blu-ray latter this year. I am not sure how, since Lucas didn't give up his archival copies of the original trilogy. Maybe they made borrowing them part of the sale. What is crazy is Lucas has never sent archival copies of the Original Theatrical Release to the Library of Congress either. They requested one as part of adding Star Wars to their film archive to save prints for future generations but he sent a remastered copy instead and refused to send an unaltered OTR after they sent it back. The changes he made were not just cleaning up the sound and picture but adding CGI to the movies. As people have been asking you. That is Computer Generated Graphics. Things he added later to the orginal movie we saw in 77 and later when Empire and Jedi came out. I have 3 brand new in the box Laser Disc players i got JUST play my OTR Laser Discs. One to watch and 2 back ups for latter in case they never release it since you can't find a VHS copy that isn't worn out or is damaged from dry rot

The ONLY way to tell if episode IV is the ORIGINAL 1979 release is to check the copyright date.

The copyright, in MY experience, is always on the back of the box or cover art, directly below the movie summary.

Any copyright date AFTER 1998 is edited.

There is some speculation that the original version may become available after Mr. Lucas' death. But unless he goes broke, that will depend on if his estate will go against his wishes. Which can land them in jail since it would be considered theft.

From the looks of the pics these are the single disc DVDs of Episode 4,5 and 6? So these are the ones that do not have the 2nd discs with the orginal theatrical releases on them, I'll be them bad copies.

The bad copies I am taling about are the Original Theatrical Release versions of the movie on DVD. They were released in a special 2 disc version of the Ep. IV, V and VI only released in 2004 and were taken from copies of laser discs and not from archive copies. So the verions are really bad...they have all kinds of digital issues like streaking. However the set you have here is not the 2 disc sets they are only the 1 disc renaster version. Unfortunately there is NO good quality digital version of the Original Theatrical Release that are sold. Even the bad copies in the 2004 release were pulled after 2006 DVD releases.
