3rd gen uses the 30 pin cable.

Thanks for the info. above. Is it charged right now? Do you by chance have a 30 PIN charger, you could send with it? All my old ones are "frayed" the only chargers I have are the "lightening chargers" for an iPhone 5. Funny I swear by Apple & we all use their phones & iPads in my house. But, their chargers/cables don't hold up veto long( well around here?!) I am guessing I can still easily buy the charger?
