This looks like a rat-tail cactus. A neighbor of mine had one years ago. If left to grow does it drop down over the sides of the pot?

I'm going to plant a few in a hanging basket to see what happens.

The segments get quite long, so they can hang over. It really seems more "prostrate" as seen on this web page:http://cactiguide.com/habitsearch/. The main difference is the spines are really short and most pics of rat tail have at least 1/4 inch spines. Also, there is no pleating and the tubercle (raised part that hosts the hairy spines) is shaped like a diamond, which I don't see in the available pics on the web. The natural habitat for rat tail is rock niches or trees! I've looked at hundreds of pics, but not found an exact match.

are the hairs a hard spine?

No, just a tiny puff of hairs. I'll try to get a close-up photo to upload, so you can see it better.

To whoever wins this auction: You can go to DavesGarden dot com and look for the forums. One of the forums is for plant identification. All you do is put up a picture of your plant and ask them to help you identify it. Unfortunately, the site is now down due to technical difficulties, so keep trying.

I've been to Dave's - good site. May give it a try. One plant that looks most like this one is Euphorbia,(Caput-medusa) but I cut one of mine open and there is no milky sap. There are a few specialists with websites, so may ask if they can identify.
