Hibiscus plants are members of the Mallow family, and there are many different species that are used in gardening, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Planting from seeds:
The seeds germinate more easily when soaked in water overnight and the heavy seed coat on each seed's rounded back is nicked with a razor blade or scraped with a nail file. Sow the stored seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in a seed-starting mixture on top of a heated seed-starting mat. The seed-starting mix needs to stay moist but not soggy, or the seeds can rot in the seven to 30 days they take to germinate.
