Description

The listing, Civil War Era Key has ended.

Civil War era key found at site of Union camp used by Union forces that were part of Gen. Hunter's attempt to seize Lynchburg near Lexington VA. While in Lexington, the Union forces burned the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and looted Washington (now Washington and Lee University) College as well as robbed citizens and burned and destroyed property. The key shows signs of a fire perhaps at that time or forest fire at later time? The key is about 2 1/2 inches long. What it went to is anybody's guess--if only it could talk!

I am a retired history teacher and yes I have other things I will be putting on Listia. The key is from another hobby, using a metal detector.

I have no idea I assume from where it was found it was used to lock something in 1864 when the Union forces sacked Washington College, sacked and burned VMI and robbed homes of citizens of Lexington as they marched through on the way to Lynchburg
