The succulent desert rose plant (Adenium obesum) looks striking when grown as a potted houseplant. The plant usually develops a swollen base, from which multiple woody stems emerge. Each stem features a cluster of thick, succulent leaves, and the plant also may produce clusters of pink flowers in late winter or spring. Desert rose is hardy outdoors only in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 11 and 12, but you can enjoy it as a perennial potted plant year-round in any climate.Set the desert rose in an area that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, such as near a south-facing window. If desired, place the plant outdoors in a sunny location in spring after nighttime temperatures are regularly above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.An indoor plant often leans toward the nearest window if it isn't rotated, which results in a weak, crooked stem.Water the desert rose when its soil feels almost completely dry when you insert your finger into the soil. Water until moisture begins to drip from the bottom of the pot, indicating the soil is moistened throughout the plant's root zone. Empty the pot's drip tray after every watering

Fertilize the plant every two weeks in spring with a complete soluble fertilizer, applied at the product's label-recommended rate for the pot size. Stop soluble fertilizer applications in early summer as plant growth slows, and make a single application of a slow-release palm special fertilizer, following the product's label rate. Make a second palm special application about two months later, in early fall.Take an outdoor desert rose indoors in fall before temperatures drop below 55 F. Reduce watering and stop fertilizer applications during winter because desert rose enters a period of semi-dormancy during the shorter and cooler winter days.
