Prepare a location where the plants are exposed to morning sunlight, but partial shade during hot afternoons.
Spade the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Dig in 1 or 2 inches of decomposed manure or compost.Smooth the surface of the soil, using the back of a rake.
Scatter seeds on the surface of the soil. Cover the seeds with no more than 1/2 of soil.
Water immediately after planting, and then water as needed to keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate -- usually seven to 10 days. Thereafter, water only when the soil is dry. Bachelor button is a drought-tolerant plant that becomes weak and floppy in soggy soil. In addition, humid conditions often lead to stem rot and mildew.Thin the plants when the seedlings are 2 to 3 inches tall. Allow 6 to 12 inches between plants.
Fertilize the plants once every month during the growing season, using a general-purpose garden fertilizer. Alternatively, work a time-release fertilizer into the soil at planting time.
Pinch wilted blooms to promote a longer blooming season. If dead flowers remain on the plant, the plant's energy is directed to setting seed instead of blooming. Leave a few blooms on the plants at the end of the blooming season if you want the plant to reseed itself the following spring.
Prune the plants down to about half their height if they begin to look leggy in midsummer. Pruning results in neater plants and a flush of new growth.
