Butterflies Love These Golden Beauties!!
Golden Canna is like other cannas in that it is so easy to grow! The flowers are such a gorgeous yellow! Canna flaccida is a species of the Canna genus, a member of the family Cannaceae. The species is indigenous to the wetlands of south-eastern USA from Texas to South Carolina.
Canna flaccida is a perennial growing to 4-6ft. It is hardy to zone 10 and is frost tender. In the southern states it blooms from spring through fall. In the north latitudes it is in flower from August to October, and the seeds ripen in October. The flowers are hermaphrodite.
Canna flaccida is aquatic species, and can be grown from standing water to containers. It has narrow, blue-green (glaucous) leaves, very pretty, large, lightly perfumed (the only yellow perfumed canna), canary yellow flowers growing in clusters at the tops of long stalks. The lip of the flower is wavy.
Growing:
When growing Canna from seed outdoors, it is best to sow at a depth of 6 mm in the late spring, when the last frost has long passed. If planning to grow Canna seedlings indoors then the seed first needs to be chipped with a knife or scrape just through the out dark layer, and then soaked in warm water for two days. The seeds (which may take from a month right up to a year to germinate) should be kept at a temperature of about 22°C. If you are successful in growing seedlings, then they should be planted about 50 cm apart in a sunny part of the garden that has good drainage.
