Rapidly Vanishing U.S. Nickel Classics
The Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel (1913 to 1938). Introduced in 1938, this distinctive coin celebrated the early west with its classic profile of an American Indian on the obverse and an American Bison of the reverse.
The Jefferson Nickel (1938 to Present). Designed by Felix Schlag (He won a prize of $1000.00 for his design) this coin was introduced in 1938. It established the definite public approval of portraits as opposed to the symbolic devices traditionally used on U.S. Coinage.
The Silver wartime Jefferson Nickel (1942 to 1945). This special minting composed of a silver alloy, was issued from 1942 to 1945 to conserve critically short supplies of nickel, essential to the war effort.
The Liberty Head Nickel (1883 to 1913). Introduced in 1883, this highly detailed design by the renowned Charles E. Barber is distinguished by the classic profile of Liberty on the face and the Roman "V" on the reverse. This is truly a collector's favorite.
