These adapters do work pretty well. I bought a few before my laptop got repaired bc it was the only way I could pick up a wireless connection. I have a tendency to break things, so I always buy extra. lol. Good luck if you decide to bid..I'll keep an eye on your auctions. Maybe I can help build credits. lol!

So, this might be a dumb question but does this pick up signals from routers or wifi in the area? Or do you have to have a router in order to get internet with this?

There's never a dumb question. This is just an adapter to pick up wireless either from a router in your house or a router in someone else's house. Before I got my own internet provider, I was able to pick up signals from my neighbor's houses. But the mini adapter isn't able to pick up a signal from long distances away (sorry..I'm not technologically inclined, so bear with me. :) ) so either works best with your own router or in a place where your neighbors are close by. I hope that answered your question..if not, please tell me and I will try again. :)

So, I live in an apartment, my upstairs neighbors have a router, I'd be able to pick up that signal and get internet with this?

It should work perfectly fine for that. I bought the adapter bc my laptops internal wireless adapter wasn't working and I couldn't use wifi at all, just connect through an ethernet cable. My upstairs neighbor had wireless and I was able to connect to theirs using the adapter. As long as they don't have their wifi password protected, you should have no problems. :)
