Description

The listing, 1964 SILVER PROOF "HEAVILY ACCENTED HAIR" KENNEDY HALF has ended.

TRUE COLLECTORS NEED TO CHECK THIS COIN OUT.
CHANCES ARE THAT YOU WILL NEVER SEE IT AGAIN.

This auction is for the "ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND", 1964 Silver Proof "HEAVILY ACCENTED HAIR" Kennedy Half Dollar.
I believe this coin to be SEVERELY UNDER-RATED in its WORTH. It has been estimated that 1% to 3% of the total mintage of proof 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars are of the accented hair variety. This would suggest a total population ranging from about 40,000 to 120,000 coins.
The extra Hair Lines above Kennedy's Ear on the Obverse, the missing Left Serif of the letter "I" of Liberty and the Breaks in the Ray on the Reverse are how you can tell the difference between this coin and a normal proof, and they are just about impossible to show with either scans or pictures, and unless you have it in hand with a very good magnifying glass, it appears that only the Extra Hair Lines are going to be your way to see what it really is while looking at it here.
I have given you scans of the actual coin that do show off the Details of the Hair above the Ear. I probably took 50 pictures in an attempt to show the same, and have added 2 (slots #3&4) pictures that actually are in focus and show the details of the Accented Hair Lines.

I am no longer accepting GIN offers for my auctions, everyone now gets a shot at bidding.

thank you. for the longest time I thought that these did not exist and then one day came across 2 of them. I love finding 2 coins that are the same... helps to negotiate a good price and allows for the second to go up on Listia.

Is a proof coin circulated also.? And if so how can you tell among other coins of the same denominations. Or even cameos? You seem to have such awesome coins and seem to be expert on them. So I think you would be the right person to ask. Or can you tell me how to find out. Thanks for any help.

I am not an expert.
there are so many places on the internet that will always be there to answer any and all questions. these days you can even enter a full question on a search engine and be sent to exactly what you are looking for. I usually prefer wikipedia for info, it will be the most thorough and truthful, but answers.com and others like it will work as well.
here is a good explanation of proof coins:
"Proof coins are minted using specially prepared and polished dies and polished blanks or planchettes. Proof coins will have a mirror like finish on the flat surfaces."
There is a bit more to it, but that is the general difference and the best way to tell the difference at a glance.

I do not mind helping out anyone who asks, for i am just paying it forward from the days when I did the same.
