The original Biwa Pearls originates in a lake in Japan named, Lake Biwa. The operation of cultivation of Pearls in Lake Biwa was started in the year 1920 and was popular for decades till the water pollution decreased the number of Pearls.

Very pretty. Had never heard of these. I read that they're illegal to sell as "Biwa" in the US unless definitely from that lake. Crazy...

I could call them something else, but what?? lol seems weird that calling them one thing over another would be illegal..I have never seen them before, and I think they are really pretty and unique..

From what I read it is because they no longer farm them from that lake due to pollution and China has picked up the market and are still calling them Biwa even though they are not from that lake in Japan.
