That's called a torii in your painting. A gateway to honor in the Japanese culture. The unit I was in At Ft Campbell Kentucky was given its nickname by the Japanese after parachuting IU not Japan to start the occupation after the bombs were dropped in ww2. There's no word for parachute in the Japanese language so they called the paratroopers RAKKASANS which loosely means falling umbrella. We are the only unit in the IS military that still uses a nickname designated by an enemy. We also adapted the torii into our unit history as well. We are the only unit that has something other than the normal atop our guidon. Ours bears the torii. A little history lesson about the subject matter of your painting and a military unit I belonged to while in the army.
