This was part of a collection of old Civil War prints that had belonged to a distant relative that died in 1928 and passed down to me upon the death of an aunt in 1987. She was the one who had the prints matted.

Historical fact. A British naval attache is reported to have sent a message home after the Monitor and Merrimac battle, "All Navy ships of the world are now obsolete." In the South, the Merrimac is called the CSS Virginia. It was called the Merrimacbecause it was built with iron over the haul of the former Union ship Merrimac.
