Questions & Comments
In 1943 (WWII), The military needed copper for ammo. They replaced the copper in the pennies for steel. In 1944 and 1945, Pennies were made from melted down shell casings. In 1982 they started making pennies out of zinc with copper coating. Thought this might help you out a bit. If you clean a penny (tarnx, etc) from pre 1982 and one post 1982, you will see a big difference in the color of the penny. Same if you do it with a pre1970 silver coin vs post 1970 coin than has no silver (quarters, nickels, dimes, etc). Advice...Most collectors don't want cleaned coins because the chemicals take away the "luster", so if you want to clean a coin, i'd suggest cleaning one that is badly damaged so you know you're not cleaning away future value.
In 1943, the military needed copper so the mints replaced the copper in pennies with steel. In 1944 and 1945 they melted down shell casings to use the copper in pennies again. In 1982 they replaced the copper with zinc and coated pennies with copper. If my memory is correct, Pre1982 pennies are 95% copper. Now they are 5% copper. The steel penny was steel and zinc...I think! Coins.about.com has all the answers
