Questions & Comments
Hahhaah I used to like in OK and I never knew a pineapple could grow here.
During the summer, they grow excellent outdoors, but they'd never survive outside during our winters. They live quite happily in a pot tho so are easy to overwinter indoors ;).
It loves sun and can handle small droughts cause everything it needs is in its leaves already. It does not like frost. I think pineapples are zoned in region 9. I have no idea what Louisiana's zone is but I'd reckon it would do fine as long as it doesn't get stranded in the flood or get any frost. Otherwise they can over-winter quite happily in a pot. They are quite resilient really. My dogs have dug some up from time to time and I just replant them and water them and they flourish like anything. BTW it's terrible how neglected Louisiana has been by the media in this flood. :(. If it weren't for Fb, I'm not sure I'd really grasp the tragedy it is. Hope you & yours are staying afloat.
I have 2 cats , who will try and eat anything lol . Will the plant survive that if I were to put it inside ? And thanks for that . We're all managing fine , by the grace of God and the love of our Louisiana neighbors . We've seen worse . Can't shake our faith .
I have around 8 of them actually. They are all toppers planted earlier this summer so have survived outside for several months and grown new shoots & roots etc. they are between 6-12" in height and I believe they typically grow new fruit within two years of planting so could possibly fruit by the end of next summer but definitely should by the following.
Before I bid , I need to ask . I live in Louisiana. Where it's so hot and humid . Right now were experiencing a record breaking state wide flood . And we hardly had a winter last year . Would it survive in our crazy temperatures and explosive weather changes ?
I can testify that they are very tough plants lol. Tough enough that I think you would notice if they were suffering in time to move them away from your cats before they were to croak. I've literally found them upside down out in the sun for possible longer than a day or two and still brought them back lol. But no one has bothered them in the last few months so they are all looking beautiful but the one I planted in too deep of shade. It just hasn't grown as full as the ones in the sun. I have far more than I need to bring inside my house this winter so I thought I would share a few ;). We travel to Central America quite a bit so love our tropical fruit and it feels wasteful not to regrow a cut pineapple so I have a bit of a pineapple garden now ;)
