The listing, 1965 Postcards EIGHT FOOT HIGH Stone HEAD National Geographic's Explorers Hall WASHINGTON, DC has ended.
Up for bid is a circa 1960s (saw the head mentioned in a 1965 article, so dating postcard around then.
Card is in excellent unused condition. There are also two other National Geographic cards from Explorers Hall included. But the Head one interested me the most!
Had never heard of these (there were 11 found), but the heads date from at least before 900 BC and are a distinctive feature of the Olmec civilization of ancient Mesoamerica (Gulf Coast of Mexico). Believed by most African American historians to be of images of African explorers that came to that area.
Interesting to be sure! My history classes were sadly lacking, but I have learned much from postcards!
Cards will be shipped in a first class envelope which carries no tracking, so please be sure you are in agreement with that method of shipping and ask any questions before bidding.
