Description

The listing, # 3 Rugose DWARF Red Cherry Tomato Seeds (20+) - Great for Containers / Growing Inside has ended.

These are a tomato plant in the process of dehybridizing.

This parent plant, was the result of an open pollinated natural cross.

I'm saving seeds to it because it has some desirable traits that are wanted in tomato plants, which are...

1. Rugose foliage - rugose foliage, means that the stem & branches to not tend to elongate as much as a non rugose tomato plant would. This habit keeps the plant compact. It also means, that if it's started or grown inside. it shouldn't get as leggy as non rugose tomato seedlings would.

2. Dwarf nature, means it will stay short, & do better when grown in containers, or inside.

3. Determinate habit - This means, the plant will stop growing, set fruit almost all at once, then die on it's own.

4. Prolific fruit set - This means more fruit per plant, hence more food, will be produced on a plant, that takes up very little space.

The fruit, is a red cherry type, bigger than a quarter.

Because this plant is a natural cross, some seeds may produce an off type (non dwarf, non rugose, etc) u can give those away, if they'll be too big for your space, of eat the fruit, but don't save seeds to it.

Only save seeds, from the plant with the most desirable traits, aka largest fruit, most fruit, rugose & dwarf habit.

If only those best seeds are picked after successive growouts, the tomato will stabilize, & the seeds will give mostly the wanted type of traits most, if not all of the time.

This plant, is very much like the Tiny Tim variety, except this plant, bears larger, & more stable fruit size, than Tiny Tim, which is probably one of the parents of this, & responsible for the rugose, dwarf habit of this plant.

These are perfect for succession plantings because they take up little space, & die on there own. The first ones can b planted & harvested outside, later ones, can be planted in containers & brought inside when it's cold & grown completely inside if need be.

The 2 seedling photos show rugose (short), & non rugose growth habits.
