Picture Is Of Baby Palms Started From Seeds In Our Backyard That Are Appx 3 Years Old

The California Fan Palm attributes include cold hardiness, fast growth and drought and salt resistance.

The genus was named in honor of George Washington.

The California Fan Palm Tree, scientific name Washingtonia filifera, is one of the most popular palms in subtropical climates because of its beautiful appearance and low maintenance. This is a large tree that can tolerate cold down to 15F making it perfect for growing in zone 8b. This palm can be grown in states like:
Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Georgia
Louisiana
Mississippi
Nevada
Oregon
Texas

Growth Rate: Moderate. In the wild Washingtonia filifera is known to grow up to 70ft tall but in cultivation it is usually not more than 30-40 ft tall and 5-10 ft wide.

Outdoor/Indoor Use: Both. California Fan Palm Tree can also grow in a pot.

Cold Tolerance: It is cold hardy to about 15-20 F and can tolerate frost. It also recovers pretty quickly from the damage. Great for USDA Zones 8b (15 to 20 F) to 11 (above 40 F).

Will it grow in New York

If you put it in a pot and bring it inside during the winter it should be ok. I don't think it would handle your cold winters outside :)

If you plant it in a planter and bring it in during the winter it should be fine. That is all I know.

So it could just stay inside

About question in Indiana. I have a pool and have been looking for trees like this that would withstand the lovely up and down weather we have. You say to plant in pot and bring in in the winter months. If I were to plant outside around my pool area and leave them out year round, are they durable enough to bounce back from the snow?

This is basically what I found online:
It will survive temperatures of ?10 °C (14 °F) with minor damage, and established plants have survived, with severe damage to the foliage, brief periods of temperatures as low as ?12 °C (10 °F). It is a favorite of cold-hardy palm enthusiasts

I personally would recommend not to plant too close to your pool as these do have large trunks when full grown and the root system may damage your pool. I would maybe ask around or check online as to how far away you should plant it should your decide to do that. :)

Regrettably, too many pool owners put these too close to their pools and down the road damage is done. Smiles:)

what about OHIO ?

If it isn't on the states listed I would do container growing. This way you can bring it into your house or garage in wintertime. I am amazed it says it can grow in Oregon as I live and grew up there and the winters can be brutal but maybe not as brutal as in Ohio? Anyhow I would do it this way and put it in a container and when it gets bigger you can transplant it to a larger pot and use those ones that can have wheels on the bottom for easy transport.

I always give a few extra seeds so maybe when one of the plants is big enough and right after the last frost you could plant it outside and see how well it holds up once winter comes around again.
