Have a French friend that told me these are used during Ephiphany. They are placed in the ceremonial "Kings cake". I guess it is a surprise that you keep when you find it. Ephiphany is celebrated in France on January 6th when the wise men arrived at Jesus' manger to give their gifts.

Whether you use them for this purpose, they are very nice miniature porcelain pieces in their original box.
