MTV, PETE WENTZ AND JAC VANEK COLLABORATE ON NEW GEAR TO STAND CONNECTED AGAINST DIGITAL ABUSE
New York, NY, October 6, 2011 – As part of MTV’s “A THIN LINE” campaign to stop the spread of digital abuse, the network today announced it is collaborating with Pete Wentz and designer Jac Vanek to release a new, special-edition bracelet and dog tag that will symbolize young people’s commitment to stand connected against digital abuse.
According to a recent MTV and Associated Press study, more than half (56 percent) of young people say they have experienced digital harassment or abuse. Encouragingly, a majority of young people now report they would intervene if they see someone experiencing abuse online. Pete Wentz worked closely with MTV to design the bracelets and dog tags which aim to inspire action, encouraging young people to stand up instead of standing by when they see digital abuse, and reminding those who are struggling that they’re connected to support. Created by Jac Vanek, these items are also meant to ignite a dialogue about digital drama in the real world.
"Digital harassment and abuse is happening everywhere, more so than most of us even recognize. Instead of letting it slide with indifference, we are bringing attention to this important issue so we can fight it together,” said Jac Vanek. “By wearing a ‘STAND CONNECTED’ bracelet or dog tag, you can bring awareness to an overlooked, yet extremely serious problem. Let the gear be a conversation starter. Enlighten those around you. Be proactive. By wearing one, you are part of the campaign and part of the movement! I couldn't be more proud to be a part of such an incredible cause to help end digital abuse."
