What makes this unlimited service? I've never used satellite radio - never saw the need to pay for radio reception - but I've never seen an "unlimited service" radio.

I bought this from somebody who, I'm guessing, opened it up and fixed it so that you never have to pay for service. When I bought it, I thought the kid was lying, but I've had it for about 4 years now and its still going.
