Description

The listing, WWII US Navy POWDER TANK **FREE SHIPPING OPTION** has ended.

Military Navy Replacement Sample Powder Tank made by TACU Co. WWII 1945

The Mark I indicates it was made for the Navy.
In a tradition dating from the earliest days of smokeless powder for the big guns, the Navy felt it was necessary to have samples of the powder exposed to the same heat, humidity, and motion as the powder loaded in the cartridges.
These would be checked periodically to make sure the powder was not deteriorating in potentially dangerous ways.
Therefore they had powder sample tanks in many of the magazines on ships.

Acquired at an estate auction in Houston Texas

Never seen one without the bolts to secure it shut? Do you think it's been modified? Never seen one with a handle? Does the handle catches look like they were put on later like they have been welded on like a repair? Thank you.

when we got this at the auction in houston,He had a few of them all the same.(this one was in the best condition) The owner of the estate said they were his personally from WWII....he was in his 70's+(?) doubt if he modified them ...they are marked though.

Here is one I just looked up on ebay. I think someone cut the ends off the bolt slides and added the handles. I may be wrong? It's just that I have never seen one like yours. I have several and I freaked out when I saw one listed here. The normally came with the ring and bolts to clamp it shut.

Look on the top of the lid on the edge of the lid bracket and see if you see any partial washer marks. A washer would have been under the wing nut that clamped it shut on the top of the lid. Thank you.

It's still a great auction!! They normally sell for around $45.00 to $150.00 if it's original. Looks like someone turned yours into a small carry cooler. I was going to jump all over it until I saw that. lol I have 5 of them. Thought I came across something that they did different. Be kind of dangerous though with the powder and all. lol

Hope you do very well. It's still a great piece. Thank you for all of your help.
