It giggles and says ma ma . I think it takes 2 AA batteries. It has new batteries in it now that I will leave in the doll. It works perfect and is in pristine condition. There are no marks on the doll or its clothing. No signs of visible damage of any kind. This doll is till like a brand new doll and my granddaughter played with it very little. She got interested in the American Girl dolls and just had no use for baby dolls.
