The listing, 10ct. Sand Dollar Cactus Seeds (Astrophytum asterias) has ended.

Packed for 2015 but kept in fridge for freshness and maximum viability.

Astrophytum asterias is a species of cactus in the genus Astrophytum, and is native to small parts of Texas in the United States and Mexico. Common names include Sand Dollar Cactus, Sea Urchin Cactus, Star Cactus.

A. asterias is small, round, spineless and squat, reaching a height of 2.5–6 cm (0.98–2.36 in) and a diameter of 5–15 cm (2.0–5.9 in).

The root of the name astrophytum refers to the stars, as in the word “astronomy,” which reflects a somewhat star-shaped appearance that is characteristic of cacti in this genus. Astrophytum myriostigma is typically found at high altitudes in central and northern Mexico. This lot includes assorted astophytum hybrids. As one of the most ornamental genuses int he cacti world, each seed is your ticket to a genetic lotttery!

Astrophytum is cold hardy to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. For best results it should be given light shade, although it will tolerate full sun. During the summer it should be given moderate water and fertilizer, but it should be kept dry starting in October. An alkaline, porous soil will provide necessary drainage, and watering from below potted cacti so the water wicks up through the soil is recommended.

Mist the soil when caring for star cactus babies as overhead watering can damage the tender tissues. They will need to be kept moist until the seedling is robust and at least ½ inch tall.

Novice gardeners love the ease of cacti care as interior plants. They thrive on neglect, although star cactus plants will need water occasionally. The body will flatten out and turn brown if it is in dire need of water.
Pot them up in a purchased cactus mix. The container should be free draining and unglazed so excess moisture evaporates readily.

Fertilize June to September when caring for star cactus. Reduce the amount of water you give in the dormant winter months.
