Does the iPad have to be out of the case in order for it to rest properly on it?

I'm not sure about the iPad but I have the Xoom in a case and it fits it just fine (I have one). It's a pretty good sized opening with a rubber lining so it does not slip. I don't know how thick the iPad is but my Xoom is over 1/4" thick, in between 1/4" and 1/2" actually. I hope this helps.
