Can't take credit for the idea. Saw one of these several years ago and made several.Have since switched to using reusable trays due to numbers, but they work great for the average gardener. Get some regular peat moss, run it thru some 1/4 hardware cloth to remove twigs and large chunks, mix 50/50 with vermiculite, and maybe some perlite(I skip the perlite) moisten thoroughly, fill your pots, plant your seed, and good luck. Milk cartons or jugs make excellent trays to set your newspaper pots in, and allow you to bottom water the plants when they come up.

I have a garden too. I start my own seeds in my tiny greenhouse.this will be great.I was just wondering..I will be having dahlia tubers up for auction soon but was wondering if I could get feedback regarding your time to plant spring bulbs in your area..I know here in WA. we can't plant untill Mothers Day (early may) but wasn't sure for the other parts of the country. Just dug them up this week.. thanks for your help..

It's early may here in central ohio as well. I do sometimes start some of my Dahlia and elephant ear bulbs in pots and keep them in the greenhouse to protect them from frost, but it does take up space. I also start filling milk jugs with water and set them in the greenhouse to heat in the sun and release heat at night to combat those cold snaps.

I grow mostly heirloom variety tomatoes and sell plants both from home and at local farm markets. Many heirlooms are longer season, so I start early and many transplant to gallon milk or water jugs which I recyle by trimming and leaving the handle to which an 18" stick can be fastened with tye wire, and you have a large plant with a handle. Most folks like a large sturdy plant. Miracle grow really does work on these plants.
