The adapter is how your pc or laptop communicates with the router. Most laptops have wifi adapters built in, but if not, this will take care of you.

It doesnt need a CD if you are running windows xp or later. It will find and install it just fine. If you have any concerns, I can burn a setup program to a cd that will do all the work for you if you are not familiar with setting these up.
