From the back of the card -
The long-standing debate over whether Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb was the greates hitter is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. Before 120, in CObb's heyday, baseball was played for a run at a time, with place hitting, stolen bases, and hit-and-run plays dominating. WIth Ruth, baseball shifted gears and became dominated by sluggers. Cobb had a disdain for power hitting, although indications are that he could have been a great home run hitter if he had so desired. Once, in response to a batting practice challenge from Athetics catcher Cy Perkins, he proceeded to hit the next 8 successive balls over th fence, then went back to his usual style of hitting. "I don't get any thrill out of home runs," he explained. When reporters pressed him, he answered by hitting 3 home runs in a game (5-5-25), and 2 more the next day. Ruth, on the other hand, felt that is job was to hit home runs. He once said that he could have complied a .600 batting avg. if he wanted to hit singles. He was fond of recalling the da he went 5 for 5, all line drive singles to left field, and was booed by the fans. They wanted to see him hit the long ball. When Ruth and Cobb were still active, they had an intense rivalry when their teams met. When they retired, they became friends and occasional golfing partners.
