The listing, Purple Pitcher Plant- Cold Hardy! has ended.
Sarracenia Purpurea- purple pitcher plant.
Zones 4-9
Native to Eastern US and Southern Canada. This is the only pitcher plant which can survive in a cold-temperate climate.
It is a "carnivorous" plant, trapping bugs in the water filled "pitcher" and absorbing the nutrients.
This plant is fascinating to look at, and it is hard to believe this is native. These grow naturally in sphagnum bogs (explaining why these aren't seen much unless you are wandering in a bog) so for use in the garden these consistently moist conditions need to be replicated.
PLEASE NOTE: Sarracenia has very interesting flowers but they will not appear until 4-5 years of growth.
The first 1-2 years you can grow this as a house plant before hardening it off to the outdoors.
The last photo shows the leathery leaves winter coloring, taken at the coastal Maine botanical gardens.
