Questions & Comments
It looks stenciled. Appears at first glance to be around 40's or 50's. Not sure with out looking at it. Are there any marks on the underside. Is there any blue dots?
i agree,it's a egg holder for soft boiled eggs,my gramps used one of them, and yup, ya could use it for a 1 or 2 shot glass,& why not, one does not spend thier whole day eatin eggs. F&W
Forgot...the reason for the cup is to hold the poached egg, shell and all, then the diner cracks it open with a spoon and scoops the soft and runny insides out to eat. F&W.....
LOL! I got so tickled when I saw "a whachamacallit" up for auction! LMBO! and yeah, they are all right, and they do go back way before the 50's and 60's. I have seen in movies set in the 1600's they ate out of egg cups at breakfast. My great grandmother had a set of them and used them all the time. My grandmother ended up with them and when she passed, I never knew what happened to them. But my grandmother told me her father bought them for her mother on their first anniversary which was in 1894. So yeah, they are old. I don't think they make them anymore. at least I haven't seen any. Its too bad you couldn't find out how old it is! It could make some money at an antique auction! Ya never know! =0) F&W!
Yep, It's for 'soft-boiled, 2 minute eggs'. The egg is left in the shell so the softness of the yellow does not run out and all. The shell acts as it's own little bowl. There are also 'egg' spoons, each has a serrated or 'toothed' edge at the point of the spoon. The 'soft-boiled' egg is 'gently' tapped just enough to cracked the shell, then the 'toothy' spoon is used to kind of cut the top off, egg and shell but enough to get the slender spoon into the egg in order to eat it. I have my gggreat-grandmother's set not exactly the same as this as well as the spoons that match the egg cups, the spoon handles are ceramic and match the design motif on the cups. Yes, turn it over, and place an egg in it and you'll see how well it fits. Your's looks like 'china painting stenciling, yes, probably very old. Late, late 1800's to 1950's. You could probably find the pattern by googling 'antique china egg cups' or something similar if you really want to know the history. Personally, I love the 'jigger' theory', 1 for an 'okay' day & 2 'as needed'!!Love it, LOL!!Thanks for the listing! Hadn't thought of mine in a long time!
Yea my peeps used the small side when it was hard boiled & the other end (larger)for softboiled, So you all are right. I still have one from our family's original set of 8
