Wonderful Vintage Los Angeles Potteries "Cookies All Over" Cookie Jar made in 1956. A wonderful piece of Americana in Great Shape.

Made by Los Angeles Potteries brand. The hallmark on the back is faint but readable in good light as follows: ©56 (for 1956) - Los Angeles Potteries - Made in USA – 91. This is one of the most sought after cookie jars by collectors and I am giving it away.

There are no chips or cracks. The jar has a small amount of crazing in the glaze finish, mostly on one side. There are firing marks on the bottom, little glaze bubbles and stray color glaze, all of which is part of the charm of 1950 period pottery, especially of the type that that some collectors refer to as California pottery. The cookie colors are bright and the ivory glaze overall is not yellowed. The overall height with the lid on including walnut shaped finial is approx 10 ½” and it’s about 26” around. Since it is nearly impossible to point out all of the inherent imperfections in the vintage pottery manufacturing process and to avoid any confusion with typical vintage pottery of this type, I am offering it “as is”. OK, now you are testing me. I think that this an other pottery that was produced in California would be more aptly termed ceramic. The piece is quite thick, maybe approx 2/3". There are lots of sites around the internet showing Los Angeles Potteries and other brands like Franciscan, McCoy, Pasedena Pottery and more. I searched around before answering you but could not find any reference specific to porcelain. This jar was made by pouring the clay into molds which were cleaned and glazed by hand. A site I found regarding Los Angeles Potteries says: Vintage Los Angeles Potteries Cookie Jars are a little bit of American and California history. The "Cookies" Cookie Jar from the 1950's is one of the most beloved Cookie Jars ever"
The "Cookie" Cookie Jar made by Los Angeles Potteries is a bit older than the more commonly found Napco brand one. Los Angeles Potteries sold the rights to Napco of Japan in about 1958. The Napco jar is virtually the same except for the hallmark on the bottom.
I do believe that all of the companies that originally produced "California" pottery have stopped manufacturing. Some of them are still in business but now make clay tiles for roofs, plumbing, etc.

No, it is not airtight. In fact these old jars were hand poured and glazed. The covers do not even sit totally straight. Some later similar pottery cookie jars made in the 60's and later had a wider neck on the lid with a plastic "gasket" around it. This one was not made that way. Most of these jars are now sitting on shelf for home decor, however, I have seen people using them in thier kitchens by storing ziplock bags with goodies inside. Thanks so much for your interest!
