I don't know alot about coins, my grandfather left me his coins when he died over 25 yrs ago and I forgot all about them, I found them recently while moving, so I hope I can answer your questions correctly. The dates range from 1919 to 1957, and the only letters I could see were D and S directly under the dates. If they are located anywhere else message me and I will look for you. Also there are two that look like they are made of tin maybe? Did they make tin pennies. My husband said they did during the war when metals were scarce, I don't know. So I hope this answers your questions and feel free to ask more if you have them and I will try and answer them. Thanks for watching my auction!
they are 1943, and thank you for that info, I did not know they made pennies like that. I have more to list, so I can add that to my descriptions. Are they rare? This is the first time I have seen them.
the steel pennies are rare they were use due to the shortage of copper since the copper was being use for bullet shell in ww2 plus after the war a lot of them were taken back to the us mint an d destroyed
Thanks for the info, you have been extremely helpful! I have jars of pennies yet to go thru so I will make sure and separate the steel ones and either list them separately in groups, or maybe with the wheat leafs. don't know yet, will wait and see how this one goes.
the steel ones are not rare at all they are cool to look at but not very expensive unless they are 1944 the copper 1943 pennies are rare. they accidentally made some so there is not very many around the world .
only the 1943 copper is rare there was only about 100 or so that got out before they stopped them and they are worth about $400.000 today my grandpa was a coin grader just last year one in almost ment sold for over $1000000 thats how bad people wont them
There were over 1 Billion 1943 Steel Pennies made. In many years, a similar amount of pennies were made. By those numbers, the steel penny isn't rare. However, if you figure that there have been Multi-Billions of pennies made before and since 1943 and 0 were steel, I guess that declares the 1943 steel penny as rare. On average, based on the red book values, steel pennies are worth no more than most copper wheat pennies dated 1930-1959. No matter what the grade. As far as the rare 1943 Copper penny. There were approx 40 made. They were technically Bronze. A few were actually made with silver. Few people know of the 1944D Steel penny (1 sold for 58,000 a couple of years ago) and the 1959 Wheat penny. Wheat pennies were supposed to stop production in 1958, but a few were made with the date 1959.
You know everyone has been just wonderful about providing me with information, I had no idea. You guys are all amazing, and I have learned alot thru this auction from all of you. I thank you for all the information that you have provided to me, I really do appreciate it. This has been my favorite auction ever, because I have learned so much that I didn't know. Thank you for following my auction and please feel free to add any other information, as I virtually no nothing about coins! Thank you agan!
Ok now this is going to sound really stupid after my last comment to you, but can you tell me where the date is on the coin? I have 5 of them sitting in front of me, and I know my eyesight is bad, but....I don't see a date.
If you are referring to the nickel, the date is the first detail to fade away. It is normally near the rim at the base of the neck on the indian. If you can't see it, it is most likely very worn, or completely gone. Most coins are dated in the same location except the new quarters (dated on back), dollar coins (dated on edge) and all pennies 1909 to present (dated to the right of lincoln). Oh and some more tid bits about some coins. The presidential and sacagewea dollar coins are only gold color, they have 0% gold. The Eisenhower (IKE) and Susan B Anthony (SBA) dollar coins that are referred to as Silver Dollars...They have no silver unless they are special proofs. Hope this helps
yes it does help very much so. And the dates must be worn because I don't see any, but at least now I know I was looking in the correct spot. Its funny that the dates are worn, but the lettering is fine. Weird.
Thanks you for fanning me and watching my auction, this one seems to have generated alot of fans for some reason. I do have more that I will be listing in the same fashion, 100 at a time with another older coing.
