Yes, it takes a single 9 volt battery. It actually makes a high pitch noise that most humans can not hear, and it works by pushing a button. You command your animal to come here and then push the button, until they listen. It actually did work on my Anatolian Shepard, and now he listens so I do not need it anymore. I only used it 2 or three times.
