does it have to plug into the stereo

Rometta is correct, it just needs batteries and you set your stereo to which ever frequency the transmitter is set to. Turn it on and the music will play through the radio.

no this doesn't have to be plugged in, you just need a radio station not being brodcasted on and it works perfect. You would love it. I have one and paid $40 for it so this is a great deal.
