Praying for the strength to guide his people, Native American leader Black Wind sees the image of a strange white woman, twentieth-century writer Susannah, who is transported back in time to help his cause.
Black Wind a leader of the Lakota in the early 1800's is on the cusp of change for all Native Americans. Ever increasing numbers of whites are invading their territory and destroying what they worship most, mother earth. He must make the decision to fight to what he knows will be the extinction of his way of life or try to find a place in his world of change without giving up his heritage. In his vision he has seen a white woman who he knows will play a pivotal roll in his life, but how he does not know. Susannah a romance writer in the twentieth century is all out of fresh ideas. After attending a nearby Indian Pow Wow she comes to a booth that has a picture of an Indian man who she immediately is attracted to. After buying the picture she meets an elderly Indian who takes her hand and upon releasing it, gives her a feather. For reasons she does not understand she knows the feather holds her future, whether good or bad.
