Description

The listing, Help me out with this one, please?? has ended.

I have no idea how old it is or if it is worth anything or not, so I am asking my fellow Listians to see if you can help me out on this one and let me know. This was handed down to me from my mother years ago and as you can see, it is very tarnished and very pretty. Unfortunately, Mom's memory is not good anymore so she doesn't remember where she got it from.

All I can tell you is that it does have 2 stamps. Please don't ask me to take a picture, because my camera will not get that close on it. Under one handle it has what looks like a small "g", but in script. On the other handle it has "OX" ... then something unidentifiable but it looks like a symbol ... then it has "1/0".

SHIPPING ---- Shipping is FREE in the US. I put tracking confirmations on most packages and will email you the number after the auction ends. I generally ship on Thursdays, but will notify you if there is a delay.

OTHER INFO ---- ** Please, Please Note ** I welcome all questions, but please allow ample time for me to answer. I work and go to college so I am not on here every day.

Thanks so much! I hate to get rid of it now honestly, but I must! I looked again today and I still cannot find anything that looks identical. I can find pieces in that are close, but that's about it. What the actual value is I have no idea.

either way, it is very pretty. I think you should keep it!

Well, I promised I would let it go here on Listia, so I cannot go back on that unless someone tells me it's worth a lot of money, then I think I will have to :)

Just looked at your pics enlarged and unless that goldish color comes off, ie shines as silver, by rubbing with your finger, it is NOT sterling, but silverplate over brass which a magnet will NOT stick to copper OR brass. Would love to see pic of inside and of handles from top.

It definitely was silver colored when I first got it. I have had it for years and it just sat in the back of my cabinet for that long. When I pulled it out it was like this.

I have a picture from the top listed :)

Magnet is NOT good way to test for Sterling, a LOT of Silver Plate is done on pot metal, copper and other metals that may or may not, contain metal that a magnet will stick too. Rub it with your finger, a lot of sterling will clean easily that way, but look with a magnifying glass for any of the silver plate chipping off. Sterling should SAY either Sterling or 925.

It does not say either one and the oxidation will not come off just by rubbing. I already tried :)

Silver plate is the easiest way to know that it is not sterling. If it says it is from a silver PLATE company then it is Plated not sterling. Either way, it is a great piece. It iS a fruit bowl. Yes, sterling silver DOES have a sweet smell to it. They are absolutely right about that. If you have any large pieces of sterling silver, that is the best way to tell because the scent is easier to smell from a larger piece until your nose gets used to smelling it, then you can smell it on any piece of sterling silver. LOL Anyway, the dates are correct, 1900-1918. That is a nice antique piece for whomever wins it and a nice polishing if done carefully will make that piece look fantastic. I wish you the best of luck on this auction. I am watching it carefully and probably will be bidding on this piece.
God Bless,
Legend Rose

I read the other posts and they are right about the magnet thing. I was watching an epasode of Storage Wars and an anteque dealer on there said the easyest way to tell if something is silver and not silver plated is to smell it. If it has a sweet smell it is silver. I know it sounds rediculis but he's the expert. lol

Interesting! I never knew that.

Well, it doesn't smell sweet, it just smells oxidized to me and it definitely does not attract a magnet :)

Got some answers for you !
"I/O" means normal silver coating which is equivalent to 1 gram of silver per 1 dm2 of base metal surface, "OX" means oxidized finish. This mark was in use from around 1900 until about 1918.

I believe this is German made Silver Plate. ( g)"G" (Geislingen an der Steige-town it was made) .. but not entirely sure.

Hold a magnet next to the item you are trying to identify. If the item is attracted to the metal, it is silver plated.
Sterling silver, like gold and platinum, is not magnetic

This is a serving bowl / fruit bowl .
A lovely piece

Wow, see, I had no idea! Thanks so much for posting. I held a magnet to it and it did not attract, so I am guessing it is sterling silver?
