Bob is short for bobbin, and you use these when you only need a small amount of one color.

Yup. The yarn bob dangles from your work with whatever color of yarn on it so that you can have it there to work in for more intricate designs. These are the Susan Bates yarn bobs, and there are ten to a package. I myself am not that advanced a knitter, but my mother-in-law used to own a yarn store. We she passed away I began educating myself about all the accessories she left behind.
