If its powder how do you burn it

You use a charcoal piece... typically you light the charcoal, place it in a heat proof dish or fill a shell with sand, place the lit charcoal in it, then the incense on top.

Since its powder can you get the sent just by placing in a container or do you have to burn it

It's been my experience that you'll get it either way - burning it is quicker, no doubt, but it is aromatic even when not burned.
