I don't see why not. You could connect wireless or with a LAN cable from the router to the PS3.

A router is used when you need more than one connection ie: multiple PC's or Xbox or PS3 all of these things can connect via a router at the same time, A wireless router is the exact same thing as a router but connects without the wires and usually has a wired option. Internet comes into your home or office through a modem ie: Cable, Phone, or Wireless that connection is almost always a single connection in order for more than one connection to take place at one time you add a router. Internet is alway a monthly contract usually through your local cable company or phone company, cost varies and can be negotiated to meet your needs.
