The listing, 1865 Silver 3 Cent Piece ! 147 Years Old! 90% Silver! Rare Year! Own a piece of history! has ended.
Very beautiful 1865 silver 3 cent piece. It is 147 years old and still looks great! It is unfortunate that it does have two holes drilled into it. However, the lettering and images are still crisp and beautiful and this a very rare year! It is made from 90% silver and still shines! Hop on this chance to own a true piece of history!
very nice coin, but it's actually a 3cent Nickel piece and contains no silver. Nickel three-cent pieces were produced between 1865 and 1889 and the design as adopted in 1865 remained unchanged for the entire 24 years of minting. The Silver three cent coins were minted from 1851 and 1873, albeit in smaller numbers once the Nickel three cents was introduced. It also has a much different obverse and reverse.

nonetheless, this coin is still very nice! hope i could be of some help :-)
I was very confused when researching this because it said this year was silver. You're saying it's not? Or there was one made like this that is silver? I'm not really sure anymore...
Yes, there are two series of the 3c piece and both were simultaneously minted from 1865 to 1873, both have completely different front and back designs, and both are a different size.
The 3c silver was originally minted in 1851 but was hoarded due to its small size (14mm diameter) and silver content. Yearly mintages ranged from 5million to 343K until 1862 when mintages dropped significantly and ranged from 21k to a mere 600 proofs in 1873, thus the extreme price increase for 3c silvers minted in 1862 and on up.
The 3c nickel was introduced in 1865 with a mintage of over 11million and had much larger overall mintages compared to the 3c silvers being minted at the same time. The bigger 3c (17.9mm diameter) was also used more in circulation as it wasn't hoarded like it's tiny silver counterpart, thus the higher prices during those years.
This is a fastenating piece! Thanks for offering this here on Listia...and don't mind those who have made negative comments. This is a GREAT auction! Fanned and will bid! :)
