22. Ober-officer and conductor of the Engineering Corps

The engineering forces were intended for use on
war of all modern military-technical means and
the most difficult and responsible jobs (construction
fortresses and fortifications, fortress walls, etc.).
In 1802, it was decided that the officers had to study for one year at an engineering school and after the examination they would receive a certificate "with the prescription of those only knowledges that they really know well". In 1804 such a school was opened.
It consisted of a conductor's department for training
young people to the rank of officers of the Engineering Corps and
officer class, which later became the foundation of the Engineering Academy. In Vyborg, Kiev, Tomsk and other cities private engineering schools also operated. They taught mathematics, artillery, mechanics, physics, topography, civil architecture, drawing <situational plans> and geographic maps, field fortification.
In 1812, the Regulations on the Field Engineering Administration came into force, according to which fortresses and points of important strategic importance were prepared for defense. In total there were 62 fortresses on the western border of the Russian Empire. The greatest influence on military operations was rendered by Bobruisk, Brest-Litovsk, Dinaburg and Jakobstadt.
The conductor of the Engineering Corps (as a junker)
wore uniforms of noncommissioned officers of the pioneer regiments.
Armed with large knives and pistols. Officers, too
had a pioneer shape, but on the collar and cuffed valves - silver buttonholes, epaulettes were all silver, a hat with a black sultan, pantaloons instead of gray ones - dark green.
