It's been around for so long it's the only nickel most of us have ever seen in circulation. (1938-2018). The nickel is worth .07 or .08 each. Because of this there is a melt ban in place on nickels to prevent people from buying thousands of dollars worth of these coins, and melting them down for a hefty profit.
The Jefferson nickel is 21.21 mm in diameter and weighs 5 g. Since it has always lacked much intrinsic value it does not have a reeded edge like other "white metallic" coins, and thus there is no reason for persons to "scrape" it's metal edges for shavings.
The original Thomas Jefferson nickel was designed by Felix Schlag, but there has recently been a redesign. In 2006 the Jefferson nickel had a small update and was redesigned by Jamie Franki.
