Questions & Comments
Sorry Hon but that's an Urban Legend about surgery in exchange for can tabs. Nice auction tho, I'm all about repurposing can tabs thru jewelry, door curtains, etc. Good luck with the auction!
:) A guy bought some from me a few weeks back and said that is what he bought them for. I've never done it, but thought it was a noble cause. A clinic close to here does something similar so this wasn't as far fetched as it seemed. But thanks!
snopes.com among many other websites say these tabs for charities have been an urban legend for 20 years but people just won't stop spreading the stories. You can Google it.
No, no, I believe you!!! I wasn't trying to dispute anything, all I was saying is that I have sold some to someone and that is why he wanted them (atleast that's what he told me). And I know a clinic in my area that asked ppl to bring can tabs in exchange for immunizations (or something of that nature). The clinic scrapped them and donated the money for a child's surgery.... I'm so sorry if I made it sound any different than that!!! I hope you have a nice day and thank you for letting me know that information was invalid :))
Supermommy, yes the tabs are worth more if repurposed into jewelry, etc. Ronald McDonalds House resells them back to crafters they don't actually cash them in for smelting because 20 tabs weigh 1 oz and 1 empty can (without the tab) weighs 1oz. How do I happen to know this? I'm President of The Tampa Bay Recycling Club since 2008 and we have done in depth studies on aluminum as well as other metals and their collective impact on the environment.
Great SuperMommy! I'll be checking them out. I've been looking for styles to share with our club members who are taking their creations to craft fairs, etc. I saw one bracelet with blue narrow ribbons holding the tabs together on an auction here and thought, boy that would be great to turn into a charm bracelet....also our members are using colored sharpie permanent markers to color the tabs and they look so cool, irridescent with the aluminum shining through, red, blue, pink, green, really nice.
