Questions & Comments

Sadly, there is no such thing as a 1982 steel penny. Steel pennies were only made in 43 and 44. In 74 there were some aluminum pennies made, but none made it to circulation. They were all destroyed except for the one that was donated to the smithsonian. However, it is possible that this is a zinc penny that was never copper plated. Although a rare mistake, over the years, pennies like this have been found. If this penny has a shinny luster to it, but no copper plating, then it is one of the rare mint errors. If it has a dull finish, it is a result of an "acid bath". Most of the the time, this happens in schools as a science experiment where they study how different chemicals react to metals. Other times this happens from someone trying to clean a penny. a major no no. you should never under any circumstances clean a coin. It kills the value. From the picture, it seems this one may be a true mint error. Pictures sometimes lie, so the best way to know for sure is to see it in person. How does it look to you?

i am not a coin collector so i am glad to you have the knowledge on this matter . this one looks like it has never been brushed or polished there is not any copper on it what so ever this has been in my jewelry box for about 24 yrs.it doesnt look like a acid wash has been done to it it is smooth in finish and not etched. i really dont remember how i came in to possession of it just thought it was unique as i did know about the 43 -44 steel pennies due to the fact of ww1 ww11 and steel was highly used in the war effort. thank you for your time and knowledge.

i cant update this late in the auction but to inform you bidders this is a silver colored penny... dont know if it is steel or an penny that did not get copperized at the mint. i just want you to know that i dont know whether it is steel or not. i just assumed so, by it's appearance and weight.
